The Town
Ischia was one of the first Greek colonies in the 8th century BC, named Pithekoussai after the pithos (pottery clay) found there. An important stop on the trade route from Greece to northern Italy, it was renamed Aenaria by the Romans. The biggest and busiest island in the bay of Naples, Ischia is a bubbling concoction of sprawling spa towns, mud-wrapped tourists, subtropical gardens and ancient booty. Ischia sees fewer tourists than its neighboring island, Capri, although in summer it's popular with Italians and Germans. The island is a good place for a relaxing vacation, especially in spring and fall. In addition to thermal pools there are beaches, geysers, gardens, ancient ruins, and a castle.
