The Town
Marianske Lazne (Marienbad in German) is is the second largest Czech spa town, located around 100 miles from Prague. with forty springs within the area and one hundred in the immediate vicinity. The town is surrounded by green mountains, and has many peaceful parks and gardens and is filled with neoclassical buildings, pavilions, and colonnades around the springs. Much of the architecture dates the town's Golden Era in the second half of the 19th century, when the town became popular with the nobility and many European rulers who came to experience the curative carbon dioxide springs. In 1866, Marianske Lazne was declared a city and by the beginning of the 20th century ranked among the most important spa centers in Europe.
In 2008, the town held a celebration of its bicentennial anniversary. The town itself is about two hundred years old, but mention of the springs is first found in 1273. Through the efforts of a Dr Josef Nehr, a physician of the Tepl Abbey, the healing properties of the town’s 100 springs began to become known. From 1779 until his death in 1820 he worked hard to demonstrate the curative properties of the springs, and the waters began to be used for medicinal purposes.
