Jachymov
The Cure
Jachymov is the site of the first radon spa in the world. Many people may have heard of radon only in the context of cancer treatment or even nuclear weapons, but actually its serves to treat a wide range of ailments and conditions very effectively. The radon water comes from the mine located in Jachymov, which is still functional, and is the oldest in Bohemia. Uranium mining ceased in 1964, and nowadays the radioactive thermal springs which rise in the former uranium mine workings are used under the supervision of doctors for the treatment of patients with nervous and rheumatic disorders.
The treatment on offer here is associated with discoveries made by Marie Curie, and one of the spa houses is named after her. The healing power of the radon water is used to treat patients with infections and degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system, as well as for treating people who have recently undergone an operation or are recuperating from injury. Diabetes and nervous disorders are also treated here. Radon Therapy is not suitable for: • Pregnant women • Certain restrictions apply for children and adolescents • Patients with an overactive thyroid gland • Patients who have had cancer treatment or a tumor removed within the last 2 years
The Town
Jachymov (Joachimsthal in German, or "Saint Joachim's Valley") is a Western Bohemian spa town in the Czech Republic , close to the border with Germany. It is situated in a deep wooded valley in the foothills of the Ore Mountains. The surrounding hills provide breathtaking views, astonishing in their beauty, at any time of the year. Jáchymov is famous for the discovery of Uranium by Marie Curie at the beginning of the 20th century, for which she won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Until the First World War this was the only known source of uranium in the world. In the nearby Ore Mountains visitors can try cross-country skiing, or go hiking and cycling on trails.
